Why has Bush cut research funds for stem cells research? Is he and religion misguided?

1500 dying of cancer daily, yet Bush has cut research funds for 7 years! Researchers are hurting for funds. Dr C at Wake Forest has a possible cure for cancer, yet his funds are cut. Embryonic stem cell research is cut by religious fanatics that know nothing of science!

Why has Bush cut research funds for stem cells research? Is he and religion misguided?
Yes, To begin stem cells do not come from aborted fetuses. At the time a cell becomes a fetus or is even detected by as a pregnancy it is well part the viable stage for embryonic research. In fact almost all the cell used are donated by people who have undergone successful IVF treatments and no longer require the embryos left over from he treatment. These embryos would be otherwise destroyed,

Finally stem cells not only come from embryos, they can also be found in amniotic fluid and cord blood.
Reply:You act as if the United States government alone can fund research. Most funds for research come from investors.

The reason researchers have problems coming up with funds is because stem cell research is a low probability, high risk investment.

If the possible return on stem cell research was as good as you and other people who know nothing about science, research or funding claim investors would be begging to dump money into stem cell research.

This would be true if the return were as little as ten percent per year, even seven percent would draw significant investment.

They are not begging to invest because there isn't much of a chance for ANY return on an investment.

The costs are extremely high, the possibility of return is very low.

This area of high investment, low return is where the United States government often funds research. Usually this investment does not result in anything viable, but, incidental or corollary discoveries are often made which eventually lead to something useful.

Often, this research is called "pork spending" by watch groups. Where do you draw the line on research? where does research become pork and pork become research?

The truth is all properly documented research can be valuable, but, there is always the reality of funding. Decisions on funding will always be made. Some researchers will get money and other researchers will not.

You want the research money taken away from someone and given to someone else for your own personal reasons. Reasons that other people may not agree with. There are people who are very happy with the research grants they are getting and who would be out of work if money was poured into something else.
Reply:The research should be done by private capital. We need to cut the reliance of government in our lives.
Reply:The private sector in America invests mightily in stem-cell research. A person of science should certainly know this
Reply:Hmmm. Religious man here who SUPPORTS the research. I think the conception or mis-conception of people is that stem cells come from abortion. My personal research tells me that this is not the case. However, to everyone's defence who is against it, George Bush has been saying over and over again, " I will not support research that supports abortion." So, this has lead a lot of people to think that stem cell research comes from the aborted baby. This is false information. I think Bush does not support the research because he rather use that money on a war.
