Cancer speech for english class??

Does this sound good for a motivating speech about cancer?

It is both a pleasure and an honour for me today to talk about the importance of finding a cure to cancer. Every day, too many times a day, is that dreaded word spoken. Cancer. Almost everyone has been touched by it in some way, either by a family member or a friend. As a matter of fact one Canadian in three will be diagnosed with cancer in their lives. Cancer is the leading cause of premature death in Canada. It is responsible for over one million possible years of life lost in Canada. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, an estimated 159,900 new cases of cancer and 72,700 deaths from cancer have occurred in Canada in the past year. The rising number of cancer cases is inevitable. But, I believe that together we can make a significant difference. Cancer research is expensive. A scientist who operates a research laboratory could spend between $50,000 to half a million dollars per year on equipment and salaries. Unf

Yes, that sounds like a solid speech - good facts - nice progression! I've included minor adjustments to consider. (It looks like much more than it is.) Some are to cut an unnecessary word; some are to increase impact. You make the call.

It is both a pleasure and an honour for me to talk about the importance of finding a cure for cancer. (omit: today)

Almost everyone had been affected/devastated by it in some way....

(replace touched with a more powerful verb)

It is responsible for robbing us of over more than one million possible years of Canadian life. (used the verb 'robbing' to illustrate loss) That life could be yours. (Eek!)

The rising number of cancer cases in inevitable, or is it?

You can make a difference. How? (This doesn't frighten people as much as the word 'involvement' - remember, we have busy lives. :)

Make a donation - no amount is too small! (Wave a large, fake one-dollar bill, show them it's easy)

Volunteer (x hours a month at: list a few places) even folding newsletters will make a significant difference. Remember, colleges like to see community service on transcripts. (Very motivating!)

Take action and speak up about the disease. (Tell them how.) A simple five-minute presentation like this is all it takes.

Believe that together we can make a difference and work our way to a cancer-free future.

Imagine waking up one morning and hearing that no one died from cancer that day or imagine a world where kids receive a cancer immunization. Wouldn't you like to be part of that solution? (Lift a piece of paper with a graphic: You = an X over the word cancer. Or: You = Cure. Audiences love movement and visual connections.)

We must make cancer research a priority today because this disease has haunted us for too long.

P.S. Thank you crafting this informative speech and for being part of the solution!
