How can I get physically ready for an athletic event?

I am walking in this year's Breast Cancer 3 Day (60 miles!) in Michigan. The event is at the end of September. I am overweight by about 40-50 pounds.

What should I be doing as far a training for an athletic event? What should my diet look like?

So far I have been doing Hip Hop Abs aerobic videos 6 days week and trying to walk at least 2.5 miles on warm days. I have also cut back a litte on my daily calorie intake (probably not enough) and upped my water intake.

I am looking for specific training guidelines. Maybe like I am getting ready to run a marathon???

Well I actually did the MS walk in DC, 50 miles 3 days. I'm a 23 y/o male in good shape, and this still put a lot of stress in my body. So, don't go into this thinking that you're not going to feel pain and it's not going to be one of the hardest things, physically, you've ever done.

That being said -- lose the weight! You don't want all that extra weight bearing down on your joints and feet. Join a "curves" or some gym that will keep you interested and motivated to keep going.

Diet -- hello weight watchers or jenny craig. They'll help you lose the weight at a good healthy pace, and one where you'll be able to keep it off.

Walk -- like do atleast 2-5 15+ mile walks before you go, and when you wake up the morning after one of the walks remember that you'll have to be doing atleast that many miles

If it turns out that you can't walk there are many other alternatives to help with the walk and to help raise money.

Reply:Cardio activity relies heavily on the heart. By training your heart with more intense cardio activity you will get yourself in shape for the walk and a wonderful side effect will be that you will lose weight. Stay off sugar, caffeine, white flour and alcohol - these all cause your body to store fat. If you walk briskly for 1.5 hours per day, you will burn large amounts of your fat reserves before September. Good luck and good job for being on the walk!
Reply:I know a walker named Gary Null. He might have some answers on his web page http://www.garynull.com

Good luck and thanks for doing something good for humanity.

Reply:start running/walking everyday, increase your distances as you feel more fit, always pick a diet that suits you. stick with lean meats, lots of vegies, 2-3 fruits a day, and good carbs that will stick with you and give you energy. Most important keep it up and don't stop. A winner never quits and a quitter never wins.
