Why do you never see Muslims volunteer or donate money to charities in their community?

Whether it is friends of the library, civic organizations, theaters or secular clubs. Do they not share values of compassion? Or do they just send their money back to their home countries.. I'm not trying to be racist, just trying to understand why I dont see them helping with anything from flood relief to cancer research.

Why do you never see Muslims volunteer or donate money to charities in their community?
You've got to get your information right before asking such questions. Do you know that Islamic societies make millions of dollars a year to help orphans, those who need food, those in need of medication %26amp; cure, those who have been through floods %26amp; earthquackes ..... etc. I live in a small country that has about 700,000 in population and the charity societies reveal information that millions of dollars have been gathered for the needy. What about bigger countries? Saudi Arabia and other Muslim countries are 50 times larger than us, how much do you think they give for charity?
Reply:We pay Zakaat (alms) every year, but we don't brag about it!
Reply:Apparently you don't look very hard. I have always given my time and money when I can.
Reply:cz in Islam it is recommended to give charity secretly...

AND... it is part of the pillars of Islam to give Zakat (charity) and Khoms (one fifth of the yearly income)...
Reply:If you can't see Muslims donate their money, that doesn't mean they don't

just open your eyes, you'll see them someday, I hope...
Reply:muslims do not tell the others when they give to charity. they just don't brag and tell people to get recognition. indeed, we believe that if ur right hand give to charity, ur left hand does not even know about it. meaning we just don't tell. coz the purpose of doing charity work is not for recognition frm fellow human being but frm Allah.
Reply:pl dont generalise. i'm a christian %26amp;i've seen them doin charity work. the agha khan foundation does lot of charity work ; cricketer imran khan in pakistan runs a hospital for cancer victims ; the arab muslims donate for educational institutions ; the london harrods owner donates for orphanages. lot of muslims do
Reply:The good moslem should never be seen giving charity, the best way to give it is by keeping it private and anonymous don't brag about it, charity is a direct act between allah and the person.

Our prophet said (pboh) "The left hand should not know what the right hand gave".
Reply:Saudia Arabia has adopted Dr. Sayed; the Famous Egyptian doctor, who discovered a cure for 13 kind of Cancer.. Saudia declared she'll give that medicine to the needy for free...

You should hear that soon.. as soon as the researches are complete....
Reply:They usually give to the mosque. I think like 2% or something. But there are some Muslims that I have read about who are philanthropists, giving millions or dollars a year away.
Reply:We don't boast about donation or charity. It's part of our routine practice and nothing extraordinary about it. In my country most Muslims pay zakat (charity for the poor and needy), including me, as part of our normal practice and rarely anybody talk about it.
Reply:In Islam, charity is something that is a requirement on each and every Muslim. Every Muslim is required to pay at least 2.5% of their total income to charity, which benefits the poor and needy.

Another aspect of charity in Islam is that it is supposed to be done solely for God, not to be boastful in the eyes of others. A lot of people only give charity publicly in order to be seen as good and generous. Sometimes in Islamic communities public donations are recommended, but only for the purpose of motivating others to also give freely. But usually charity is given privately. In fact, it is usually recommended that in times other than public fundraisers Muslims should give the money privately without other people seeing them. This is so that there is no possibility of giving the money for any other purpose other than for intention of following the commandments of God.

And to respond to your apparently bigoted claim above - Muslims do volunteer and donate money to charities in their community. And Islam encourages Muslims to be active in their community and to volunteer and donate for good causes. For example, after Katrina many Muslims donated both time and money to help the rebuilding effort(see links below). But theaters and secular clubs are not charities. And by the way, Islam is against many kinds of theater and secular clubs in this country. Why should Muslims donate money to causes that are against Islam?
Reply:USA conquered cold war by the volunteer or donated money by Muslims and hijacked idea of Jihad in Afghanistan. By fooling the religious feelings of Muslims all over the world.
Reply:Most of em try to support the islamic states at war, since the US is doing a great job of funding Israel. 3 billion dollars is a lot to compete with you know!
Reply:well while i am not Muslim i know that they have a spacial funding there place that they give i think it is 2% of there income before tax and that goes to community that are having trouble with things like paying for food or school fees and all that type of thing and unlike any other charity no money in that fund is allowed to be used for expenses incurred in distrusting it out that is n there holey books so the cost of running that come out of the normal donations to there religion...

I do not see any other religion doing this do you?
Reply:When I was younger I lived near a mosque and there were always people there. My friends went there, and their family was constantly volunteering there- helping out the older folks get to the mosque and doctor's appointments, tutoring kids, etc. Her older sister volunteered at the high school a lot as well.

Really, if you think about it, since they aren't doing it so everyone can see it, they are being the bigger person. You know that since they volunteer quietly they aren't doing it for recognition, but because they truely want to help.

It would be better if everyone stopped volunteering for personal gain.
Reply:I see them do these things all the time. I am a Muslim and participate in such things when I can, as a Muslim you have to. Maybe there aren't many Muslims where you are, or you don't know WHO is a Muslim and who isn't. Also, about your comments about immigrants --that is normal for immigrants from most countries since they want to take care of their families first. Wait for the next generation if you really want to judge....Muslims are supposed to leave a place better than how they found it.

In my husband's country of Morocco they don't want to open 'senior citizen homes' for Moroccans because they don't want ppl to stop taking care of their family and dropping them off at the 'home'. I did read about them starting to open more of them for Europeans etc...retirees...ppl that need a nurse all the time...since it will be cheaper there for them.

I have often known ppl who want to give money to charity and give the money to a friend they trust to then give the money to a third party that needs it that they don't even know. That way the party that recieves feels no obligation to pay it back...nor do they feel the shame that sometimes comes with being in need.
